Free radicals are unstable molecules . . . they are "active" oxygen atoms with a positive electrical charge. These molecules have become unstable because their positive and negative charges are not balanced, which typically occurs when active oxygen (positively charged) "steals" an electron from other tissues so it can become balanced.
- When metal rusts, it is being oxidized.
- When an apple turns brown, it is being oxidized.
Free radicals rapidly react with other stable atoms close by, and continue the chain of electron theft in an attempt to stabilize their charge. Once this cascade begins in a cell, it continues unless an anti-oxidant is present to donate an electron or negative charge. If left unchecked, the oxidation cascade leads to cellular aging, dysfunction and death.
The free radical theory of aging proposes that we age because our cells are damaged by free radicals and reactive unstable oxygen over our lifetime.
